Informed by research (e.g., The Perry Study, etc.), the HighScope® curriculum, which has been evolving since 1970, revolutionized early childhood education with a new approach to teaching and learning. Research-based and child-focused, the HighScope® Curriculum uses a carefully designed process — called “active participatory learning” — to achieve powerful, positive outcomes.

The HighScope Curriculum® helps young children excel in language and cognitive learning, while promoting independence, curiosity, decision-making, cooperation, persistence, creativity, and problem solving — fundamental skills that help determine success. The curriculum stresses the following goals:

• To learn through active involvement with people, materials, events, and ideas.

• To become independent, responsible, and confident — ready for school and ready for life.

• To learn to plan many of their own activities, carry them out, and talk with others about what they have done and what they have learned.

• To gain knowledge and skills in important academic, social, and physical areas.

HighScope® is used throughout the United States and in many countries internationally including Canada, Chile, China, Indonesia, Ireland, Korea, Mexico, The Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

High Scope® is comprised of eight core areas that involve 58 key development indicators to support assessment of a child’s development and learning.
